Quaker Values at McCutchen Friends Home

These values center around the Friends' belief that each human life is sacred - that there is "that of God" in every person. This conviction has led to more than three centuries of Quaker action to promote equality, respect for differences, and the dignity of all people.

  • BELIEVING that all people have strengths and capacities that can be supported and nurtured. Focus is on a person's wellness and abilities rather than on needs, disability or illness.

  • RESPECTING the dignity of each individual, regardless of infirmity or frailty.

  • INVOLVING residents in decisions about their own lives and surroundings as a way of recognizing independence and supporting the highest possible quality of life.

  • SUPPORTING mutual respect and interaction among residents with other residents, their families, staff and the wider community.

  • CREATING social environments that draw on the skills and unique experiences that residents bring to the community's life.

  • PROVIDING nursing care for frail and confused residents that is not dependent on the use of physical restraints.

  • BELIEVING that the later years of life are full of potential for love, growth, friendship, and contributions to others.

  • INVOLVING employees in broad areas of decision-making and treating them with respect.

  • OPERATING under the leadership of a Board of Trustees that carry out business on the basis of Quaker decision-making processes (seeking unity in decision-making) and Quaker values.

  • MANAGING finances prudently, as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing care and service for residents.
